Purple Heart

A few cuttings that traveled south eight years ago, and still multiplying.

Type: Ornamental

Sun / water: Full sun, partial sun or shade / drought tolerant, though the leaves get thin without enough water

When I plant it: Anytime of year except the dead of winter.

What I’ve seen

Purple flowers when hydrated, thick stems and dense leaves. A couple of cuttings traveled south eight years ago and have produced multiple plants.

How I use it

Purple heart is ornamental and a Florida landscape staple. It is hardy, and dropped stems will plant themselves; stems also root wherever they touch dirt. Very easy to propagate.

This profile shares what I have experienced growing this plant in my Central Florida garden. I am not a certified horticulturist, so results in your garden may differ.
