Hi, I’m Amy Schihl.
I created Augustus Gardens to help people who want to garden in Florida but struggle to find advice that fits our climate. I want to share the lessons I learned the hard way so others can avoid the same mistakes—and have the freedom to make new ones of their own.
I do not have formal training in gardening or landscape design. My education came from experience: trying, failing, learning, and trying again. I am not a self-professed expert. I am here to offer honest insight from my own journey.
Why Florida changed everything
I gardened for many years in Michigan before discovering how quickly the familiar rules changed in Florida. The seasons, planting windows, soil, heat, humidity, rainfall, pests, and plant behavior of Zones 8–10 are different. Much of the general gardening information available cannot simply be replicated here.
Augustus Gardens exists for that gap: to help gardeners experience the “Aha!” moment—understanding why something worked or did not work, recognizing when they are already on the right track, and finding the confidence to persevere.
The reward is worth the work
Gardening is a passion, but it is also hard, dirty work. It leaves aching muscles and a to-do list that never quite ends. Yet the rewards are extraordinary: the harvest, the beauty, the joy, and the satisfaction of sitting at the end of the day and looking over something you helped create.
That moment brings contentment, a smile, and gratitude for the Lord’s blessings.
