Type: Tuberous herb, grown as an annual
Sun / water: Filtered light, like a jungle canopy / water daily until established
When I plant it: Late winter. Harvest in late fall before the cold arrives.
What I’ve seen
Not full, with pointed, spiky leaves. In Florida it needs to be harvested before cold weather; this is a jungle plant.
How I use it
Moderate. Ginger has traditionally been used as a medicinal. Grate it for a variety of dishes, slice it for a candied option, or dry it for baking and Asian dishes.
This profile shares what I have experienced growing this plant in my Central Florida garden. I am not a certified horticulturist, so results in your garden may differ.
